My Experience Working at Worlds of Fun

Josh Smith

Josh is enjoying his sixth season at Worlds of Fun and his third in the marketing department. He is a recent Northwest Missouri State alum. When he isn't at the park he is cheering on his favorite soccer team, Sporting Kansas City.

My name is Joshua Smith, a Public Relations major at Northwest Missouri State University. I have spent four seasons at Worlds of Fun; two in games as my first job and two in Public Relations as my most recent job. Now, coming up on my senior year, I am looking back and finding that Worlds of Fun has taught me many skills that will last me a lifetime, and has provided many great opportunities to assist me in college. Here are six things that Worlds of Fun has provided for me throughout my four seasons.

Sales Skills

Games kids at Worlds of Fun are known to be a very high-energy bunch. As a 16-year-old boy, games taught me to unleash my energy and embrace my weird side to bring as much excitement to my jobs as possible. Throughout my two seasons in the games department, I developed the necessary communication skills and confidence needed for a sales position.

Customer Service Skills

From my first day at Worlds of Fun, customer service became one of my favorite things about working. Since the park is such a big place, many guests will need assistance finding where to go. There is nothing more satisfying to me then being able to assist a guest with their questions. With my most recent position as a Public Relations Specialist, assisting guests in the park and on social media is my favorite part about the job.

Self-Motivation Skills

In my opinion, one of the most important things in any job is setting personal goals to keep you motivated in work. Setting goals for myself is what keeps me passionate about my jobs and allows me to have as much fun as possible. I learned this skill while working games, challenging myself to get a less popular game in the top ten games of the night.

Internship

While looking for internship positions for my major, I discovered the opportunity of having a PAID Summer internship in the Public Relations/Marketing department. When comparing internship experiences with my friends, I feel as if I got extremely lucky landing my Internship at Worlds of Fun. My position has allowed me to get tons of hands-on experience, network with other organizations and practice what I have learned in the classroom. I have, and will continue to recommend internships at Worlds of Fun to all of my friends.

Scholarship

One of the great benefits of working at Worlds of Fun while in college is the opportunity of receiving their scholarship. Last year, I had the privilege of being awarded a $500 scholarship to assist me with my financial needs. This scholarship was given out to employees based on years of service, performance, and financial need in school.

Travel Pay

Another benefit available for college students working at Worlds of Fun is their travel pay program. For those students that live at least 75 miles away from the park, Worlds of Fun will pay for the time it takes you to drive to and from work, as long as you work at least 10 hours that week. Living in Maryville, I would have an hour and a half drive to and from work, so the travel pay program made it possible for me to continue to work throughout the fall and winter.

Worlds of Fun will always be my home. I have learned many skills, made many friends and have had plenty of fun doing it. I highly recommend anyone that is looking for a fun job or internship to apply at Worlds of Fun.
