Top Moments of the 2021 Season!

Kathleen Chartrand Photo Kathleen Chartrand |
December 29, 2021

As we near the end of the year, we reminisce the highlights of the season, looking back on all the events that made 2021 a year to remember. This season started out in extraordinary circumstances, which just led us to extraordinary fun! We’re sure you have your own highlights, but here are some of ours.

Riptide Raceway

Initially scheduled for 2020, Riptide Raceway was just waiting to be unveiled and slid down this season! Uniquely its own, it became the world’s longest mat racing slide on completion, with 360-degree slides, four tunnels for ultimate racing, and nearly five stories high for maximum velocity! The first attraction to be added since 2013, it certainly made a big splash at Oceans of Fun!

Eli the Worlds of Fun Railroad

We’ve been waiting for the return of Eli since the end of 2019. A full steam engine that takes guests on rides across the park, its absence left a hole in in our park, and even more so in our hearts. A day at Worlds of Fun just isn’t complete without hearing the toot of the horn as Eli chugs along the tracks, reminding everyone that he’s waiting to take you for a ride on the rails.

While it took until the summer, we’re glad Eli is back and chugging along the park.

More Halloween HAUNT

This year was our first year adding even more Halloween HAUNT. In our all thrill Thrilling Thursdays, we started a new type of Halloween HAUNT for those committed to the excitement of our biggerst rides and biggest scares. While offerring a select number of attractions that differ from the Friday and Saturday HAUNT experience, these meaner and leaer evenings are perfect for those who want to get through as many haunted attractions as possible. With all the large coasters open and a quieter parade, it leaves you more time for screaming and less time in crowds. Who can say no to more screams?

Worlds of Fun 50th Groundbreaking

We got to look back fifty years ago to our creation and remember our roots. On November 10th, 1971 Lamar Hunt and Jack Steadman broke ground on their creation, Worlds of Fun. Joined by investors and elected officials representing the surrounding community, they unveiled the park's iconic balloon logo, released balloons with certificates that could be redeemed for passes on the Grand Opening, and began building the park. Looking back helps us remember where we came from as we look forward to bringing you more years of fun!

Hot Air Balloon Flight

We finished the year strong with the first ever flight of the Worlds of Fun hot air balloon! Starting over by Oceans of Fun, the balloon flew over the park and landed in the Patriot Grass on the last weekend of the season! While we’ve had the balloon since our start of Grand Carnivale in 2019, it lifted from the ground for the first time this year! Fifty years since the park's groundbreaking, we were finally able to achieve the vision of becoming part of the balloon city that Lamar hoped for Kansas City. Keep your eyes to the sky, and you may catch the hot air balloon soaring once more!
